Is a 0 in your mobile number bad?

Short answer: no. But the real answer is more interesting than that, and it explains why the question keeps coming up.

No. In the 8-Chi Wisdom Numbers system a 0 is not an unlucky digit, because it is not a digit the system reads at all. The eight stars are formed only from 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Zero and five appear nowhere in the 64 combinations, so a 0 forms no star with the digit beside it.

The system only reads eight digits

Mobile number numerology in the I-Ching tradition works on pairs. Two digits sitting side by side resolve into one of eight stars, four auspicious and four ominous, and your number is read as the sequence of pairs it contains.

The table those pairs come from is built from eight digits, not ten:

0123456789

Sixty-four combinations, eight per star. Zero and five are not in any of them. That is not an oversight or a simplification, it is how the table is constructed.

Why those eight, and not ten

The reason sits further back, in the Luo Shu (洛書), the nine-square grid that I-Ching numerology is built on. Arrange the numbers so that every row, column and diagonal sums to fifteen and you get the arrangement the old texts call the 九宮, the nine palaces. Five lands in the centre. The other eight, running 6, 1, 8, 3, 4, 9, 2, 7, sit around the outside.

Those eight are the ones that pair with each other. Five is not one of them because it is the centre rather than a point on the ring, and zero was never on the grid to begin with. So the exclusion is not a rule someone added later. It falls out of the structure the whole system rests on.

So what does a 0 actually do?

It does not form a star. That much is settled by the table. But the tradition is not silent about zeros, and the teaching is more specific than most of what circulates online.

Three things are said about them.

1. A zero splits a pair that would otherwise have formed

Put a zero between two digits and the star they would have made does not make. The clearest example in the material concerns Sheng Qi, the benefactor star: a Sheng Qi pair with a zero dropped into the middle is said to turn toward 小人 energy, the petty or two-faced people who take more than they give. The helpful people become the other kind.

The same splitting is noted for Tian Yi pairs. Numbers like 103, 301, 608 and 806 are Tian Yi combinations interrupted by a zero, and the tradition associates them with friction in relationships and with money that goes astray.

2. Quantity matters

Two or three zeros in one number is treated as its own signal. Zero is read as a pit or a hollow: money that does not hold, energy that drains, tiredness that does not resolve, and a great deal of effort that ends up benefiting somebody else. Much given, little returned.

3. Position matters more

A number ending in 0, or in 05, gets the sharpest description of all. However wealthy or successful the person is now, the ending is said to represent emptiness: the four emptinesses, of wealth, career, relationships and health.

So the honest answer to the original question is not simply no. A single zero in the middle of an otherwise sound number is close to neutral. Several zeros, or a zero at the end, or a zero sitting precisely where it breaks your only auspicious pair, is a different conversation.

Why numbers with a 0 get a closer look anyway

Yvonne lists mobile numbers containing a 0 as one of the situations she is asked about most, alongside business owners with cash-flow problems and couples navigating marriage strain. Not because the zero is a verdict, but because a number carrying one reads differently from a number that does not, and people who have one usually want to know why.

A Singapore mobile number is eight digits. That gives you seven adjacent pairs to read. Put a zero in the middle and two of those seven pairs are no longer pairs at all, which changes what there is to read.

What to do if your number has one

Nothing, on that fact alone. A zero is not a reason to change your number, and anyone telling you otherwise without having looked at the whole sequence is selling rather than reading.

What is worth doing is finding out what the rest of your number is carrying. The pairs that are there are the ones doing the work, and two of the eight stars are written up in full already: 絕命 Jue Ming, the high-risk star, and 五鬼 Wu Gui, the star of restless brilliance.

Good To Know

Questions, answered

Is 0 an unlucky number in Chinese numerology?

Not in the 8-Chi Wisdom Numbers system. The eight stars are formed from pairs of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 only. Zero appears in none of the 64 combinations, so it is not classed as auspicious or ominous. Other Chinese numerology traditions treat 0 differently, which is where most of the confusion comes from.

What about the number 5?

Five sits in exactly the same position as zero. It is absent from the combination table, so it forms no star with the digit next to it either. Any claim you read about 5 being lucky or unlucky in this system is coming from somewhere else.

Does that mean a 0 in my number does nothing at all?

No. It is not one of the eight stars, but the tradition has clear positions on zeros. A zero breaks the pair it sits inside, so an auspicious combination can stop behaving like one. Several zeros in a number are read as money and energy that drain away. And a number ending in 0 or 05 gets the strongest reading of all, as emptiness arriving eventually regardless of present success.

Should I change my number because it has a 0 in it?

Not on that basis alone. One zero in the middle of an otherwise sound number is close to neutral. What matters is how many there are, where they fall, and whether one of them is breaking a pair you needed. The free reading will tell you that before you consider anything further.

About this page. What you have read here is the traditional meaning of one star, set out in general terms. A real mobile number carries several stars at once, in an order and at a strength that changes what each of them does, and the same pair reads differently depending on your age, your circumstances and how long the number has been in use. So parts of this will fit you and parts of it will not, and that is expected rather than a fault in the system. Treat it as a map, not a verdict.
